Ljubljana (270 000 inhabitants) is the largest city and capital of Slovenia, the city is in a flat area about 300 meters asl along the banks of the river Ljubljanica. Ljubljana originated in Roman times as a small military establishment under the name Iulia Aemona, but it was only from the thirteenth-fourteenth century that it became a city of some importance, at that time began to be part of the Hapsburg Empire and was known with the old German name of Laibach, a name which remained until the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
