Maribor (130 000 inhabitants) is the second largest city of Slovenia, is located in Lower Styria along the banks of the river Drava. The city was founded in the twelfth century as castle and later as a market area around the castle, in the thirteenth century it obtained city privileges and then was under the control of the Habsburgs, whose empire has been a member until the end of the First War World and until then was known by its German name of Marburg an der Drau. Maribor is now a major tourist destination in Slovenia, with the interesting old town in the Austrian style and the ski resort of Pohorje Mariborsko, located on the outskirts of the city, where each year is also disputed races of the Ski World Cup.
