TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: WHAT TO VISIT IN ARCOS DE LA FRONTERA
The best vantage point from which you can admire the spectacular silhouette of Arcos is the road of Paterna and Alcalá de los Gazules to the south, from the road of Algar and El Bosque to the north-east and east, from the road to Jerez de la Frontera to the west, and from the path of Bornos and the access to the cliff of Arcos to the north.
The historical center has important monuments in particular in the area between Cuesta de Belén to the Puerta Matrona, this last one is the only survivor gate of the Arabic wall. Plaza del Cabildo is the main square, some of the main monuments of Arcos are here: the Ajuntamiento (Town Hall) in a building of 17th century; the Castillo de los Duques de Arcos, an Arabic fortress reconstructed in 15th century; and remarkable panoramic points. Between the religious buildings vorting a visita there are: the Basilica of Santa de la María de Asunción (13th-14th century), in gothic-plateresc style; the Church of San Pedro, in baroque style; the Church of San Miguel; the Convent de la Encarnación (16th century), the Convent de la Caridad (18th century) and the Hospital and the Church of San Juan de Dios (16th century). Very beautiful are the remeins of the medieval town-walls.
Arcos del la Frontera is a good starting point to visit the other villages along the road of the Pueblos Blancos, like Ubrique, Medina Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera, the road pass through the Serranía de Ronda, and the natural parks of Sierra de Grazalema and Los Alcornocales. Other places to visit in the area are Cadiz, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Jerez de la Frontera and the Doñana National Park (an UNESCO World Heritage). |
