The small city of Baeza (15,000 inhabitants), lies approximately at 770 meters of height on an hill dominate the region of the Loma and Las Villas, on the right side of the Guadalquivir river, at only 10 km from Úbeda, both the cities have been declared, in 2003, a World-Heritage properties of the humanity from the Unesco. The historical centers of these two cities represent the first amazing example of renaissance civil architecture and city planning in Spain during the beginning of 16th century.
Baeza, although it has had roman origins and it has been an important center during the Arabic occupation, today is known, thanks to the work of architects as Andrés de Vandelvira, for some of the best examples of Italian renaissance architecture presents in Spain. Baeza in fact appears more like an Italian city than a Spanish one, with a inusual sense of light, order and proportion. |
