The Balearic Islands are an archipelago, situated in the western Mediterranean Sea in front of the Gulf of Valencia, formed from four main islands: Majorca (Mallorca), 3,626 sqkm; Minorca (Menorca), 689 sqkm; Ibiza, 571 sqkm; Formentera, 83 sqkm; and from other smaller (Cabrera, Conejera, Espardell etc).
The archipelago in total extends on an area of 4.992 sqkm and counts approximately 1,000,000 inhabitants, it forms a Spanish province with capital city Palma de Mallorca. The official languages are the Catalan and the Castilian.
The islands are mostly flat with little elevated hills, only the island of Majorca has a mountain chain that culminates in the Puig de Torrellas (1,445 m). The natural beauties make the tourist industry the greater economic activity of the archipelago.
