The Canary Islands are an archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast of Morocco, they form one of the autonomous community of Spain. The archipelago covers a total of about 7 447 square kilometers and has more than 2,000,000 inhabitants, and made up of eight main islands: Tenerife (2 034 sq km), Fuerteventura (1 659 sq km), Gran Canaria (1 560 sq km), Lanzarote (845 km), La Palma (708 sq km), La Gomera (369 sq km), El Hierro (268 sq. km) and La Graciosa (29 sq km).
Administratively the autonomous community of the Canary Islands is divided into two provinces those of Las Palmas, with the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife is the most populous island with nearly 900,000 inhabitants.
The islands are of volcanic origin, and largely semi-desert, their geography presents rocky coastline and major mountains, including the highest mountain in Spain, the Teide volcano (3,718 meters), located on the island Tenerife. The natural beauty of the islands made of the tourist industry, along with agriculture and fisheries, the main economic activity in the archipelago.
