USEFUL INFORMATION FOR A TRAVEL TO SWEDEN

Travel Documents: A valid passport entitles EU and North American citizens to a three-month stay in Sweden. Citizens of other countries should check with a Swedish diplomatic representative in their home country.

Health: Citizens from within EU/EEA countries and some other countries with which Sweden has a special agreement are entitled to the same medical services as the Swedes. Citizens from North America and other countries from outside the EU/EEA countries must pay for the medical treatment. Make sure that you are covered by your health insurance and bring necessary documents on your trip.

Pharmacies: Prescriptions are dispensed at pharmacies (“Apotek”), which are generally open during normal shop hours. A 24-hour service is available in the major cities.

Pay phones in Sweden require either a prepaid phone card, credit/debit card and Swedish or Euro coins. Phone cards are available almost everywhere from newsagents’ shops or kiosks to supermarkets.

 

Mobile Telephones: The country is well covered with GSM 900/1800 mobile phone networks. In southern Sweden coverage is virtually 100%. In northern Sweden there is good coverage on the main roads and along the coast.

Mobile Telephone Companies: Telia mobile, Tele2, Telenor and 3.

Internet: Most airports, train stations, public libraries (free) and hotels will offer the service of computers with Internet access. There are also various cafés with internet terminals in most cities.

Money and Banks: The monetary unit in Sweden is the krona (plural “kronor”) and equals 100 öre. Bank notes are printed in values of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 kronor, coins 50 öre, 1, 5 and 10 kronor.

ATMs are readily available in major cities, you can get cash with your Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or Cirrus card at any “Bankomat” or “Minuten” ATM.

Major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Sweden at restaurants.

Banking Hours: Banking hours are Monday-Friday 10.00 am – 3.00 pm Thursday 10.00 am – 4.00/5.30 pm. In some cities banks may stay open until 6 pm. All banks are closed at weekends and on public holidays.

Electricity: The normal electric current in Sweden is 220 volts AC in 50 cycles.

Shopping hours: Monday-Friday 9.30 am - 6 pm, Saturday 9.30 am - 2/4 pm. In larger towns, department stores remain open until 7.00 pm or longer. Some are also open on Sundays between 12 noon and 4.00 pm. Shops generally close early the day before a public holiday.

Typical Products: The land of IKEA, is the realm of design, furniture, innovative and elegant glass objects, art objects, antiques and crafts.
