The Matterhorn (4,478 meters), called Mont Cervin in French and in Italian Cervino is one of the most famous and photographed mountains in Europe, is in the Central Alps, on the border between Italy (Valle d'Aosta) and Switzerland (Valais), along the chain of Pennine Alps above the town of Breuil-Cervinia in Italy and Zermatt in Switzerland. The mountain consists of crystalline metamorphic rocks (schist and gneiss), and rises in the shape of a pyramid, dominating the north basin of Zermatt, in the south of Breuil-Cervinia. There are numerous glaciers, all of modest proportions: on the Italian side, the glaciers of the Cervino, Forca, Leone; on the Swiss side, those of Furgg, Matterhorn and Tiefenmatten. It was climbed for the first time in 1865 from the Englisman E. Whymper.

The most scenic side of the Matterhorn is that we admire from Zermatt (Switzerland side), on this side I suggest to take the Gornergrat railway and between the Rotenboden and the Riffelberg station follow the Riffelseeweg path leading to the lake Riffelsee on which water the Cervino-Matterhorn is reflected; another interesting excursion is that from Blauherd goes down along the Seenweg and Gourmetweg paths to Zermatt, in this journey you can admire several alpine lakes between which the most beautiful is the Grindjisee, a lake surrounded by trees on whose waters reflected the Cervino-Matterhorn.
