Fethiye (45,000 inhabitants) is one of the most important tourist localities of the Turkish southern coast, situated in a splendid bay, is found in the province of Mugla to 140 km to the east of Marmaris, the ancient name of the city was Telmessos.

Fethiye main attractions: Fethiye is dominated from a beautiful fortress of the Knights of Rhodes (XV century), on the heights of the city, numerous Lycian tombs has been carved in the rocks, between the most remarkable that of Amyntas, in doric style, than date back to the IV century bC.

But the true touristic attraction of Fethiye is the sea, between the more known beaches are the beach of Çalış, 4 km to the west of the city, or the Island Şövalye (the island of the Knights), in front of the port. To little distance from Fethiye lies the more famous beach, the so-called Blue Lagoon, the bay of Ölüdeniz where are 3 km of beaches and crystalline waters. But many others are the sea places in the outskirtses of the town: Kidirak, the Island Gemiler (S. Nicholas), the bay of Kötürümsü, this last bay can be reached only with the boat, here in an idyllic scenary of forests and cascades is the valley of the butterflies.

At 7 kilometers from Fethiye, the Greek ghost village of Kaya Köyü is found, the settlement was abandoned in 1923, is an extended and impressive place with abandoned houses and a church.

Around Fethiye, are the ancient important rests of several Lycian cities: at 19 km north of Fethiye are the evocative ruins of Kadyanda (Uzümlü). At 36 km to east of Fethiye the ruins of Tlos are found, the oldest city of Lycia (rests of a castle, the agorà, a theatre, the roman baths and the necropolis). To approximately 65 km to south-east of Fethiye are the ruins of the ancient capital city of Lycia, Xanthos (theatre, tomb of the Harpies, monument to Nereid, agora) and of the center of cult of Letoon (rests of the temples of Apollo, Artemis and Leto); Xanthos and Letoon has been inserted in 1988 in the list of the world-heritage sites patrimony of the humanity of the Unesco. On the western side, to half road towards Marmaris is found Kaunos where magnificent tombs have been carved high in the rocks.

At km 44 to south-east of Fethiye, between the ruins of Tlos and Xanthos, a beautiful walk allows to admire the Saklıkent Canyon, formed from an impetuous torrent.

The climate of Fethiye is the classic Mediterranean climate, with mild rainy winters and warm and dry summers. The rainy months are those between November and February, while the dryest months are between May and September. The medium temperatures are around 17°C, with variations between the medium temperature in July and August of 34°C and the average in January of 15°C. Annual rainfall varies from 1100 to 1150 mm.
