Tourist Guide and Information about Vatican City

The Vatican City State (Status Civitatis Vaticanae, Stato della Città del Vaticano) is the smallest independent state in the world, is located within the city of Rome in Italy and that is what remains of the temporal power of the Catholic Church.

The state of Vatican City was established in 1929 as a result of the Lateran Pacts signed by Benito Mussolini and Pope Pius XI. This small area is formed by the St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Square and the Vatican gardens enclosed within Leonina's walls. The Vatican is the center of power of the Catholic Church.
