| Eighty Mile Beach is situated about halfway between Broome and Port Hedland, from Cape Missiessy to Cape
Keraudren and Mandora
Salt Marsh, Western Australia. This is a beautiful
stretch of beach, a white siliceous sand beach about 100 metres wide, offering lots of
varieties of shell washed ashore. Shell collecting is a daily ritual on the beach
at low tide. Unlike many of the beaches in Western Australia there is no restriction on
collecting shells at Eighty Mile Beach. The variety
of shape, size and colours of the shells found here is really quite amazing. This is also the most important area for waders in north-western
Australia, it is especially important as a landfall for southwards-migrating birds. In the months of June through to October, whales are often seen. A Caravan
Park has been established on Wallal Downs, situated 245 km north of Port Hedland or 365 km
south of Broome. |
