The Nambung National Park in Western Australia is situated 250 Km North from Perth. Right in the heart of Nambung National Park it's the
Pinnacles Desert: thousands of huge limestone pillars rise out of a stark landscape of
yellow sand desert dunes. In places they reach up to three and a half metres tall. Some
are jagged, sharp-edged columns, rising to a point; while others resemble tombstones. The
thousands of limestone monoliths scattered around the sandy plain south of the coastal
township of Cervantes were mistaken by early Dutch sailors for the remains
of an ancient city. They are the fossilized roots of long-dead threes and shrubs.
Limestone formed around the roots of plants growing on stable dunes about 30,000 years
ago. The plants died and the dunes moved on leaving the calcified structures exposed.
