Chapada Diamantina is a National Park that it lies about 450 Km.
from Salvador, created in 1985, the Chapada Diamantina National Park is a mountain area with
mountains 1200 m above sea level located within the central region of the state of Bahia.
It's 152.000 hectares of mountains, rivers, falls, and caves and it's equivalent to twice
the area of Switzerland. The coexistence of the
drought-ridden semi-arid Sertão (or Caatinga) ecosystem that borders the park with the
lush green mesas and underground waterworld within it is truly amazing. Named by the
miners who once came in search of diamonds, the Chapada Diamantina is now sought out by
adventure travelers who come to hike the trails, explore the caverns,
the mountains (as Morro do Pai Inacío), the Marimbus Pantanal and swim in the mountain-fed waterfalls.
The best place to stay for visit the
Chapada is the little town of Lençois. In the beginning
of the 19th century, in the Chapada were discovered massive diamond veins. With that,
Lençóis became the third largest town in the northeast state of Bahia. Today, the
population is only 4000, but tourism is coming and the little town is very nice to visit. |
