Igaraçu is
a beautiful little village situated 30 km north from Recife.
In 1535, Portuguese Duarte Coelho landed in the place to occupy his captaincy, donated by
the Portuguese Crown. Duarte Coelho installed a stone mark, functioning as a dividing spot
between the captaincies of Pernambuco and Itamaracá. In 1537, was founded the Vila de
Igaraçu (Igaraçu's Village), of wich name means "big canoe". There is found
the oldest church of the country (1535), that of São Cosme and Damião. Another place to
visit is the Santo Antônio Convent, build in 1588 by the Franciscans. Today, in the
place, is also the Museu Pinacoteca (Gallery Museum). This is an interesting stop on the
road to Itamaraca and Fort Orange.
