BANFF NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA
BOW RIVER VALLEY PARKWAY, CASTLE
MOUNTAIN, JOHNSTON CANYON |
 |
BOW RIVER VALLEY PARKWAY: Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada |
| The
Bow River Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) is a beautiful scenic route paralleling Highway 1
between Banff and Lake Louise. You can access the parkway 5 km west of Banff, at Castle
Junction, and at Lake Louise. I suggest to do this road early in the morning when is easy
to see wildlife (Elks, Red Deers, Bighorn Sheeps and
sometimes Bears and
Coyotes). The landscape of the valley is beautiful with Castle Mountain and the Bow River,
an interesting stop is at Johnston Canyon. |

Park, Alberta. Mt. Rundle that overlooks Banff from the south end is a landmark of the
area. |

JOHNSTON CANYON: Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada |
| Situated
on Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A), one half-hour west of Banff and one half-hour east of
Lake Louise. This is a
narrow, dark canyon cut by rushing
waters. In some places the canyon walls are more than 30 m. high and less than 6 m.
across. The trail show seven waterfalls, you can pass through a natural tunnel where the
creek once flowed to a close-up of a waterfall. One hour (return) to Lower Falls, two
hours (return) to the Upper Falls. |

| Lower Falls, Johnston Canyon, Banff
National Park, Alberta. The Lower Falls, is encountered just twenty minutes into the walk
at 1,1 km, this is a spectacular cascade 20 m. in height, this stop features a viewing
platform literally underneath the falls on the other side of a natural tunnel carved into
the hillside by the rushing waters of an abandoned channel. |

CASTLE MOUNTAIN: Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada |
From the Trans-Canada Highway turn east at Castle Mountain
Junction, 28 km. northwest of Banff, then left on Highway 1A (Bow Valley Parkway), at the
5 km mark from the junction turn right to a parking area here is the Castle Mountain
Lookout.
Castle Mountain (2862 m.) is among the most
magnificent peaks in Banff, it's a fortress-like mountain with its towers, terraces and
sheer walls. |
