JASPER NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA
MOUNT EDITH CAVELL |
 |
To get to the area go 7 km south of Jasper on Highway 93A. Travel
5,4 km and turn right onto Cavell Road, a switchback road climbs 12 km to a pic-nic area.
| The Cavell area offers fragrant subalpine
forest, flowery alpine meadows, and spectacular views of Mount Edith Cavell and the Angel
Glacier. Mount Edith Cavell is a 3363 meter peak, the mountain was given its official name
in honor of a British nurse who was executed for helping prisoners of war escape
German-occupied Belgium during World War I. To get to the area go 7 km south of Jasper on
Highway 93A. Travel 5,4 km and turn right onto Cavell Road, a switchback road climbs 12 km
to a pic-nic area under the mountain's spectacular north face, from here start the
"Path of the Angel Glacier" trail, experience three kinds of glacier formations,
icebergs, snow and ice avalanches, ice caves, waterfalls, and emerald green lakes. |
|
This is
an exceptional soft trail to one of Jasper's most scenic areas. The trail is 1,6 km
and takes 1-2 hours. This short trail take you across a rocky landscape recently covered
with glacial ice. Signs explain how the area is now begin recolonized by plants and
animals. The trail, which is paved initially, climbs steadly for half a kilometre to a
junction near the end of the pavement. Continue straight ahead to Cavell Pond, which laps
the ice of the Cavell Glacier. You may see icebergs that have fallen into the water.
Across the valley the Angel Glacier rests her wings in the cirque between Mount Edith
Cavell (left) and Sorrow Peak (right). |
