KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK, BRITISH COLUMBIA
FIREWEED TRAIL, MARBLE CANYON and
PAINT POTS |
 |
The western entrance to the park is located in British Columbia
at the junction of Highways 93 and 95 in the town of Radium Hot Springs. The parks
eastern entrance is located at Vermilion Pass in Alberta.
| Kootenay with the contiguous national parks
of Banff, Yoho and Jasper, as well as the Mount
Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber provincial parks was inscribed, in 1984, by
UNESCO in the world heritage list. Situated
on the west side of the Continental Divide, Kootenay National Park extends for almost 1406
sq. km, across the valleys of the Vermilion and Kootenay Rivers. Kootenay offers a variety
of landscapes this is a land of startling contrasts, towering summits, hanging glaciers, narrow chasms, and colourful-splashed
mineral pools. There are short interpretive trails at the Continental Divide
(Fireweed Trail), Marble Canyon and the Paint Pots. |

FIREWEED TRAIL, Kootenay National Park, British Columbia,
Canada |
| This
trail is situated at the Continental Divide, the parks eastern entrance, located at
Vermilion Pass (1651 m) in Alberta, about 95 km east of Radium Hot Springs at the British
Columbia-Alberta border. The Continental
Divide marks the dividing line between Pacific and Atlantic watersheds. Interpretive
displays explain the history of the pass and the large forest fire that swept through this
area in 1968. The Fireweed Trail is a 0,8 km interpretive loop through the burn. The walk,
through young pine and fir and the skeletons of devasted trees, illustrates how the burnt
area is regenerating itself. |

MARBLE CANYON and PAINT POTS: Kootenay National Park,
British Columbia, Canada |
Continuing 7 km south on the Highway 93 you'll reach beautiful
Marble Canyon.
There is a short but very beautiful trail
here, a 1,6 km (return) interpretive trail crosses the narrow gorge over footbridges and
ends at a waterfall where Tokumm Creek plummets into the canyon. The trail tells the
geological story of Marble Canyon and Prospectors Valley. Blue glacial meltwater, grey
limestone walls, and green cliff-dwelling plants make Marble Canyon one of the most
colourful canyons in the mountain parks. More 3 km to the south on the Highway 93 from
Marble Canyon is Paint Pots. The Paint Pots are pools of water formed by gradual
deposition of iron salts around the rim. A 1.5 km trail leads to this point of unique
geological and historical interest. About 100 years ago, the colorful earth out of these
ochre pools, were collected by the Kootenay people and later by European settlers to use
as a coloring agent. Cold, iron-rich mineral springs bubble up through small pools and
stain the earth a deep ochre colour. |
