YOHO NATIONAL PARK, BRITISH COLUMBIA
TAKKAKAW FALLS |
 |
Reaching the falls is simple, head out of Lake Louise on Hwy
1 but do not take the exit for the Icefields Parkway. In a few miles you will cross the
British Columbia border and enter Yoho National Park. Several miles further there
will be a sign for Takkakaw Falls-Yoho Valley where you must turn right. This road is
about 14 km to the falls.
Takkakaw Falls is the highest waterfall in
the Canadian Rockies, with a vertical drop of 380 m. The name "Takkakaw" is a
Cree Indian word meaning "magnificent". The setting of these falls, in the great
glacial valley of Yoho, is spectacular. Takkakaw is fed from the Daly Glacier part of the
vast Waputik Icefield. From the parking area is a short trail (1 km, 25 minutes) to the
falls.
From the diary: "380 m. of
cascade, one of highest of the North America. That beauty! They are just beautiful and
with the binoculars you can admire the water that seems to come to you with power. We make
a brief path and we reach them, we can feel on the face the water of the falls: one sweet
breeze." |
