Piazzale Michelangiolo is located on a rise on the south bank of the Arno and affords the best panoramic view of Florence and the surrounding valley. It was built between 1865 and 1871, when Florence was the capital city of the Kingdom of Italy, by the architect Giuseppe Poggi.
