Iao Valley
State Park is easy to reach by car and starts about 5 km north of Wailuku. Iao Valley is a
peaceful lush area with easy hikes, exotic tropical plants, and clear, natural pools. The Iao Valley has been a destination for pilgrims since ancient times, when it
was one of the most sacred spots on Maui. The Iao Needle is a famous landmark in
the state park, it is a lava remnant, covered with vegetation, and rising 685 m from sea
level. Iao Valley was the site, in 1790, of one of the most famous battles that occurred
in Hawaii and changed Hawaii history, when King Kamehameha I destroyed the Maui army in an
effort to unite the Hawaiian Islands. On the way up to the Iao Needle and the State Park,
you can see the profile of John F. Kennedy in the West Maui mountains.
