FUCECCHIO FORTIFICATIONS
The fortified complex of Fucecchio, that during
World War II was severely dameged by bombardments, it was recently restored. The
entire complex is today a park, it's dominated by the towers of the "Rocca"
erected by the Florentines in 1322, during the war against Castruccio Castracani, lord of
Lucca. These fortifications are constituted from two greater towers, the "Torre
Grossa" and the "Torre di Mezzo" and from a smaller one (said popularly
Pagliaiola) encircled by a double curtain wall with flanking towers and other
fortifications. The entire complex dominates the historical center of the town and rises
on the rests of the ancient Salamarzana Castle. |
