MALMANTILE: a fortified village near Florence

wpe3BF6.jpg (10530 byte)

From the Superstrada Florence-Pisa-Livorno, exit at Lastra a Signa. From the Autostrada del Sole (A1), exit Firenze-Signa. Direction Lastra a Signa. From the center of Lastra a Signa follow the indications to Malmantile, the village is about 4 km from Lastra a Signa.

Malmantile walled village, stands on an elevated position in the southwest of Lastra a Signa, about 20 kms from Florence. This is an interesting excursion to the summit of a steep hill south of Lastra a Signa, on which is situated the fortified village of Malmantile, enclosed within its stone walls, which defied the forces of the Prince of Orange in 1529. This episode was described by Lorenzo Lippi in his poem called the Malmantile. The walls were built at the beginning of 15th century at the same time as the walls of Lastra a Signa. The Florentine Republic built this fortified outpost to fortify the area south of the River Arno which had found itself without any defensive structures and to control the road to Pisa. The works of construction started around 1400 and ended around 1426. Probably Filippo Brunelleschi surveying the last part of the work of these walls. In 1530 after the fall of the Florentine Republic Malmantile lost its importance. Later, in 18th century, when a new road was opened in the valley between Montelupo and Lastra a Signa, Malmantile remained isolated.

The fortification has two gates: porta Fiorentina and Porta Pisana, this last is the best preserved. The walls have a dimension of 125 x 70 meters in a rectangular shape. The town walls are completed with 4 square towers at the angles and other two towers at the middle of the longest sides.
