The zone where is situated
Montespertoli is a wide hilly area between the Pesa and Elsa valleys about 35 km from
Florence. The area produce red wines and its vineyards characterise the landscape.
Lucardo, one of the most ancient and important towns in the zone, was founded during the
era of the Longobards. In the area the castle of Poppiano belonged to the Guicciardini
family and that of Montegufoni belonged to the Acciaioli family. The area was annexed as a
Florentine county in the second half of the 12th century. The most important market in the
area took place in San Pietro in Mercato, less than two kilometres from Montespertoli. But
in 1465, Montespertoli, because of its important position on the road to Volterra, became
the seat of this profitable appointment. The transfer of the market preceded that of the
"podestà" seat, which took place in the 16th century.
