SCARPERIA
PALAZZO DEI VICARI |
 |
| Scarperia,
lies 30 km north of Florence, in the Mugello valley. The village was founded in 1306 by
the Florentine Republic, which decided to create a military outpost to guarantee the
viability from Florence towards the north. In 1415, Scarperia became the seat of the
vicariate and held administrative functions covering a vast territory. The planning of
this new fortress was entrusted to the architect Andrea Pisano. It is likely he took part
only in the building of the Palace-Fortress, seat of the Vicarious. The castle became the
most important of the north-east Tuscany. The Palazzo dei Vicari is a classic and austere
residence on the inner facade - towards the main square of the town - and a fortress in
the rear. The palace complex includes at the base inclined walls and of a high tower
coming out from the right angle of the inner front. The facade is also adorned by an
incredible number of coats of arms of the Florentine Vicarious. The inside courtyard is
characterized from furnishings and frescoes of the 15-16th centuries that contrasts with
its the rude external aspect. In the Palazzo dei Vicari is an artistic patrimony that
includes coats of arms from the Florentine workshop of the Della Robbia, and numerous
frescoes from the Florentine school. It's also home of the Museum of Knives (Museo dei
Coltelli) and of the Public Library (Biblioteca Comunale).
