| The Southern
side of Mauritius is the most beautiful part of the island, there are waterfalls,
mountains, tea plantations, gorges and beautiful beaches. |

Rochester falls |
| The
Rochester Falls can be reached by a road which crosses a sugar plantation that is open to
visitors. Water cascades over spectacular lava rock formations, the water tumble from the
Savanne River from a height of about 10 m. where constant erosion has fashioned the
basalt rock into upright columns. |

Gris Gris, Souillac |
| Souillac
is a seaside resort on the rugged Southern coast. The appeal of Souillac lies in it
scenery, the high cliffs here drop abruptly to the sea and the bracing winds of the Indian
Ocean blow all the year round. At the southern end of the village is Gris-Gris, a
viewpoint on the clifftop. |

Tea plantations |
| A French priest, Father Galloys, introduced the tea plant, Camellia Sinensis, to
Mauritius in 1760. Pierre Poivre planted it on a large scale in 1770. In the 19th century,
Robert Farquhar, Governor of Mauritius, encouraged commercial tea cultivation. Today tea
Plantations in Mauritius covered an area of about 760 hectares. Tea is mainly
manufactured for local consumption. |

| At Plaine Champagne there are three viewpoints within 3 Km of
each other giving panoramic views across the Black River Gorges with the peaks of Rempart
Mountain and Corps de Garde in the north-west just visible in the distance. |

Chamarel waterfall |
| The Chamarel waterfall emerges from the moors and primeval vegetation and is
startingly beautiful. The water tumble from the St. Denis River in the Black River Mountains from
a height of about 83 m. |

Coloured earths of Chamarel |
| Chamarel
is a mound of undulating land stretching in contrasting layers of colour, and the patches
of blue, green, red and yellow earth are believed to be the result of weathering. Sunrise is the best time to see the
Coloured Earths. |

Casela Bird Park |
| Casela Bird
Park is a park with over 10 hectares of land and contains more than 140 varieties,
amounting to 2500 birds. |

Ile Aux Cerfs |
| Ile Aux
Cerfs is an island found on the east coast of Mauritius, with several excellent sandy
beaches for swimming and snorkelling. The crossing takes about 20 minutes, boats leave
every half hour from 9am to 5pm. It's also possible to walk round of the island, it takes
about 3 hours. |
