NOUVELLE CALÉDONIE (NEW CALEDONIA, NUOVA CALEDONIA)
EAST COAST OF GRANDE TERRE
Grande Terre
is by far the largest of the islands that formed New Caledonia, and the only mountainous
island. It has an area of 16,372 sq km, and is enlongated northwest-southeast, 350 km in
length and from 50-70 km wide. A mountain range runs the length of the island, with five
peaks over 1500 meters. The highest point is Mont Panie at 1628 meters elevation. The East
coast is more green and tropical. Here you can still find traditional Kanak villages.
