Bora Bora is
part of the Society Islands, it lies about 260 km northwest of Tahiti.
The island is surrounded by a beautiful lagoon and a fringing reef. In the center of the
island are the remnants of an extinct volcano, rising to two peaks, Mt. Pahia (649 m.),
and the highest point, Mount Otemanu, reaching 727 meters.
The population is about 4,500 people (year 2000). The major
settlement, Vaitape is on the western side of the island.
The products of the island are mostly limited to what
can be obtained from the sea and coconut trees. Today Bora Bora is mainly dependent on
tourism. The only beach of the island is on Matira point to the south. If you want to find
more beaches you need to reach the chain of motus that encirled the island where you will
have fantastic view of mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
