The
Marquesas Islands (1050 sqkm., 8700 inhabitants) is a group of 12 islands located between
600 and 1,000 km south of the equator and 1400 km north east of Tahiti .
It's the most spectacular and remote archipelago in French Polynesia. They are high
islands of volcanic origin, dominated by needles and peaks of lava, five of which are
taller more than 1000 meters. The Marquesas Islands have no protective coral reefs or
lagoons. Álvaro de Mendaña who reached them in 1595, named it "Las Marquesas de
Mendoza" in honour of his patron Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, the Viceroy of Peru.
The polynesian name is "Te Fenua Enata" ("The land of men"). French
painter Paul Gauguin and Belgian singer Jacques Brel spent the last years of their lives
in the Marquesas, and are buried there.
