FAKARAVA
Fakarava is
shaped like a rectangle with a length of 60 kilometers and a width of 25 kilometers.
Fakarava is the second biggest atoll of the Tuamotu after Rangiroa. Fakaravas first
European visitor was Russian navigator Bellingshausen in 1820. The main village of Rotoava
is located in the northeastern corner of the atoll. The 1996 census found 467 people
living on Fakarava, making a living from copra, mother-of-pearl and Tahiti cultured pearl
farms.
