BRAGA
The city of Braga is situated in Northern Portugal about 55
km North of Porto.
Braga was founded by the Celts in 300 B.C.
and later it was a Roman administrative centre (founded around 27 B.C.), with the name of
Bracara Augusta. The Moors took possession of the town in about 730 and
then later in 1040 Fernando I of Castile liberated the city from these occupiers. In the
12th Century, during the reign of King Dom Afonso Henriques, Braga gained importance. It
quickly became a spiritual centre and the home for the Catholic Church. Splendid and
architecturally interesting buildings still remain to record this period. The main places of interest to visit are: the Cathedral (12th-18th
centuries), the treasury and Sacred Art Museum; the museum at the Biscainhos Palace; and
the Dom Diogo de Sousa Museum. Also deserving to be visited are the churches of
Misericórdia (Renaissance), Pópulo (17th-18th centuries) and of Nossa Senhora Branca
(18th century). On the outskirts, 2.5 miles away from the centre, stands the sanctuary of
Nossa Senhora do Sameiro; the ancient monastery of Tibães, dating back to the Suevian
period and rebuilt in the 11th century, and the Church of São Frutuoso de Montélios (a
7th-century Visigothic temple). The scenical Santuary of Bom Jesus do Monte was built
between 1784-1857.
