PRASLIN |
 |
| Praslin, is the second largest Seychelles island, it lies 40 km northwest of
Mahé (a short 15 minute plane flight, or 3-hour boat ride from Mahe). Most of
Praslin, which has an area of 44 sq.km., is covered in tropical forest. The island has
5000 inhabitants, the majority of the inhabitants live in one of the two villages: Baie
Ste. Anne in the east and Grand Anse village in the west. In Baie Ste. Anne is a small
port, from which it is possible to take a ferry to Praslins neighbour island of La Digue. The ferry takes only 30 minutes. The beaches on
Praslin are some of the most beautiful beaches within the whole of the Seychelles. Amongst
the best beaches are those of Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette, Anse Kerlan and Anse Volbert or
Côte d'Or. Nature lovers will be delighted by Praslin, especially the Vallee de Mai, an
enchanting nature reserve. The famous "coco de mer" with their suggestive shapes
grow in profusion here. In 1983, this valley was declared by UNESCO a world heritage site
with these words: in the heart of the small island of Praslin, the reserve has the
vestiges of a natural palm forest preserved in almost its original state. The famous coco
de mer, from a palm-tree once believed to grow in the depths of the sea, is the largest
seed in the plant kingdom. |
