REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK,
CALIFORNIA |
 |
| Redwood
National Park is along US Highways 101 and 199. From 101, access additional park sites via
the Bald Hills Road, Davison Road, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, Coastal Drive, Requa
Road, and Enderts Beach Road (south to north). From 199, take South Fork Road to Howland
Hill Road. Travelers to Redwood National Park will have the pleasure of venturing
along U.S. Highway 101 this road for a 78-mile stretch from Eureka to Crescent City,
transforms into the Redwood Highway, one of California's most breathtaking road. Redwood
National Park is home to some of the world's tallest trees: old-growth coast redwoods.
California's coast redwood (Sequoia semperviren) can live to
be 2000 years old and may grow to a height of 122 m. and have a width of 7 m. at
its base. California's
North Coast provides the only such environment in the world. There are three members
of the redwood family: coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) of the California
coastal fog belt, giant sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) of the Sierra Nevada,
and dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) of central China. Redwood
National Park comprises a region of coastal mountains bordering the Pacific Ocean north of
San Francisco. It is covered with a magnificent forest of sequoia redwood trees. The
marine and land life are equally remarkable, in particular the sea lions, the bald eagle
and the endangered California brown pelican. This park was included in the UNESCO World
Heritage list in 1980. |
