CANYONLANDS NATIONAL
PARK, UTAH
ISLAND IN THE SKY |

| This is the most visited and easily reached area of Canyonlands. To
reach this part of the park, take US Highway 191 to Utah Highway 313 (10 mi/16 km north of
Moab and Arches N. P., or 22 mi/35 km south of I-70) and
then drive southwest 22 mi/35 km. Driving time to the visitor center from Moab is roughly
40 minutes. On the road I suggest a stop at Dead Horse
State Park. Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary
sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its
tributaries (mainly the Green River). The Canyonlands area was only designated a National
Park in 1964. In this section of the park 20 miles of paved roads
lead to many of the most spectacular views in Canyon Country. The places that I
strongly suggest to visit are Mesa Arch, Green River Overlook and Grand View Point
Overlook. |
