GOOSENECKS OF THE SAN
JUAN RIVER STATE PARK, UTAH |
 |

Goosenecks of the San Juan
River, State Park, Utah. |
| The
Goosenecks are situated four miles off Utah Highway 261 near Mexican Hat north of Monument Valley. These "goosenecks" are a classic
example of a meander. The San Juan River thru the goosenecks is 22 km long, but only
covers 2,5 km in distance. Twenty million years ago the San Juan entrenched its meanders
into the buried rock of the Monument Upwarp creating goosenecks. The park, to which entry
is free, has just one extended viewpoint of several huge river bends, a deep canyon with a
series of stepped cliffs and terraces, this is recognised as one of the best examples of
entrenched river meanders in the world. The river runs through a deep, arid canyon 300 m.
below the overlook. It very nearly doubles back on itself not just once but several times
hence the name goosenecks. To have so many turns so close together in such a deep canyon
is unique and a truly amazing sight. This is a place to not be missed! |

| Mexican Hat gets its
name from a rock formation north of town that resembles an overturned sombrero. |
